This 2012 release of two of the world’s most difficult clarinet concertos by the Belgian clarinetist, Eddy Vanoosthuyse, demonstrably showcases his ample technical and musical gifts as a wide-ranging performer.  From capturing the varying moods of the fanciful Corigliano to navigating the jagged writing of the starker Carter, Vanoosthuyse is always convincing in the sureness of his approach.  Similarly, and with a tip of the hat to conductor/clarinetist Paul Meyer, the Brussels Philharmonic is a complete and commanding partner in these thorny compositions…

Like a fine vocalist with one continuous register, clarinetist Eddy Vanoosthuyse seamlessly crosses registers and long intervals with disarming ease and complete uniformity of tone control.  He melodic phrase-spinning is always attractive and pointed in its goals, and his tone is infused with subtle variations of timbre and a judicious use of vibrato.  Vanoosthuyse has an amazing ability to make you forget how difficult are the range and technical challenges of these difficult works; his playing is always spot on and clearly stamped with a feeling of ownership.

Certainly one of the world’s finest musicians, who just happens to be a clarinetist, Eddy Vanoosthuyse’s disc of the the Corigliano and Carter Clarinet Concertos should be included in everyone’s library.  The convincing musical commitment to these daunting works by Vanoosthuyse and Paul Meyer will bring you back to this recording many times.

Vanoosthuyse clearly has a special affinity for these demanding concertos and advocates their character with concentration and assurance. There’s highly persuasive support from the Brussels Philharmonic.
